BREANNA CONTRERAS TO SPEAK AT FEBRUARY 25TH FIRST JUDICIAL BAR ASSOCIATION LUNCHEON

SANTA FE, NM February 11, 2019 - Breanna Contreras will speak at the February 25, 2019 luncheon of the First Judicial Bar Association at the Hilton Hotel in Santa Fe. Her presentation, Community Property & Copyrights: Blue Dogs, Trivial Pursuit, and Peanuts Comics will help practitioners be aware of intangible intellectual property created by spouses, and addresses how courts in community property states have handled intellectual property when the divorcing spouses did not provide for it in their divorce. SF CITY COUNCIL PASSES CAMPAIGN FINANCING REFORM

SANTA FE, NM December 12, 2018 - The Santa Fe City Council passed a landmark campaign finance law allowing the city to match limited funds raised by publicly financed candidates. The measure will allow such candidates to compete on a more equal playing field with privately financed candidates and those receiving support from independent groups. The law is the culmination of years of work and a recommendation from the city’s Ethics and Campaign Review Board, chaired by Bardacke Allison partner Justin Miller.

JUDY CHICAGO AT ART BASEL MIAMI BEACH

MIAMI, FL December 4, 2018 - Art Basel Miami 2018: A major exhibition of Judy Chicago’s work opens today at Institute for Contemporary Art Miami, titled “Judy Chicago: A Reckoning.” The exhibition coincides with a series of events celebrating Chicago’s groundbreaking work in modern art. Max Mara and ICA Miami co-hosted a dinner party to celebrate the exhibition at Soho Beach House Miami, at which Judy Chicago's limited-edition T-shirt for Max Mara was unveiled. Attendees included Maria Guilia Maramotti, Jeffrey Deitch, Casey Fremont, Nina Johnson and Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn. Ms. Chicago will be featured in a conversation with Jeffrey Deitch at Art Basel Miami Beach’s Conversations, a book signing at Soho Beach House, and other events throughout the week. Ms. Chicago’s art is exhibited in museums worldwide.  Ben Allison represents Ms. Chicago and attended the events.

SANTA FE, NM October 31, 2018 - Bardacke Allison lawyer Breanna Contreras’s article Til Divorce Do You P(Art) is featured in the current issue of New Mexico Lawyer, a quarterly magazine of the New Mexico State Bar. The article focuses on how courts in community property states, including New Mexico, deal with dividing divorcing spouses' intellectual property rights. Breanna is an intellectual property lawyer who manages Bardacke Allison’s federal and international trademark registration practice and represents clients in copyright and trademark licensing, brand strategy, and enforcement of intellectual property rights.    

HOLMES & WATSON COMING TO THEATERS THIS CHRISTMAS

LOS ANGELES, CA October 29, 2018 - Columbia Pictures has released the trailer for Holmes & Watson. The slapstick reimagining of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson features Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, who last teamed up in Step Brothers (2008). The movie is set to arrive in theaters December 21, 2018. Bardacke Allison LLP represented Conan Doyle Estate Ltd in connection with the film.

VICTOR GRAFE III SWORN IN TO NEW MEXICO STATE BAR

ALBUQUERQUE, NM September 25, 2018 - Bardacke Allison LLP associate Victor Grafe III was sworn in to the NM state bar today in a special session of the New Mexico Supreme Court held at the Kiva Auditorium in Albuquerque. His admission was made on a special motion by his father, Gerald Grafe, a Corrales patent lawyer. Many of Victor’s family and colleagues attended. Victor’s practice focuses on intellectual property and commercial litigation, including copyright and trademark counseling, protection, and litigation, patent ownership disputes, and contract and business tort lawsuits.

SHERLOCK HOLMES 3 PRODUCTION DETAILS RELEASED

LOS ANGELES, CA June 21, 2018 - Warner Brothers and Village Roadshow have announced a release date of Christmas Day 2020 for Sherlock Holmes 3, the third in the series starring Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. John Watson. The first Sherlock Holmes was released December 25, 2009. The second, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, was released December 2011 and grossed $545 million worldwide. BEN ALLISON PRESENTS TO SANTA FE ESTATE PLANNING COUNCIL

SANTA FE, NM June 20, 2018 - Ben Allison spoke on intellectual property in the estate planning context today to the Santa Fe Estate Planning Council. His presentation, “Do You Know What your Client Owns? Intellectual Property in a Creative Community” focused on surprising realities of copyright and trademark law that estate planners need to understand to handle various kinds of intangible rights.

Ben is an intellectual property trial lawyer and also devotes substantial time to licensing, literary, art, and entertainment transactions. He has negotiated transactions with Sony/Columbia Pictures, Warner Brothers, Paramount Pictures, CBS Television, the BBC, Random House, and many others.

 

MANUEL HINOJOS CLAIM REPORTED IN SANTA FE NEW MEXICAN

SANTA FE, NM June 1, 2018 - The Santa Fe New Mexican reported on the filing of Manuel Hinojos’ claim against Lowe’s Market for discrimination based on race and a serious medical condition. Mr. Hinojos, a Bardacke Allison LLP client, worked for Lowe’s for 21 years, but was fired when he was diagnosed with lung cancer and because he stood up for Mexican and Hispanic customers and employees of Lowe’s. 

 

 

CONTRERAS HONORED AS 2018 SOUTHWEST SUPER LAWYERS RISING STAR

SANTA FE, NM May 25, 2018 - 2018 Super Lawyers has honored Bardacke Allison lawyer Breanna Contreras (née Houghton) as a Southwest Rising Star in Intellectual Property, an accolade reserved for the top 2.5% of lawyers in the Southwest United States. Contreras has experience in a variety of intellectual property matters, including copyright and trademark licensing agreements, registering US and foreign trademarks, and defending and enforcing intellectual property in state and federal courts. Breanna also serves on the board of the State Bar’s Intellectual Property Law Section.

SANTA FE, NM  May 17, 2018 - Bardacke Allison LLP congratulates Victor Gerald Grafe III on his graduation from the University of Arizona Law School and on his return to our firm. Victor was a Bardacke Allison summer associate in 2017 and is now working part time while studying for the New Mexico bar exam. During law school he was a member of the Arizona Law Review, won multiple academic awards, and interned with the Honorable Philip Espinosa of the Arizona Court of Appeals and with the Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project. He is married to Elena Grafe and they have two young daughters. Victor has lived in Paraguay, where he and Elena met, and before law school served as a Baptist minister and as an orchestral violist. He is fluent in Spanish. 

COURT PROTECTS TRADE SECRETS

SANTA FE, NM  April 25, 2018 - First Judicial District Judge David Thomson recently ordered the immediate protection of trade secrets of Steep Hill Labs, Inc., a world leader in scientific medical cannabis testing. Bardacke Allison lawyers secured the order on behalf of Steep Hill after a competitor obtained Steep Hill’s highly confidential laboratory procedures, developed by Steep Hill scientists over ten years. The competitor was ordered to return any copies or derivations of the trade secrets and is enjoined from viewing, accessing, copying, using, or implementing them.

JUDY CHICAGO NAMED TO TIME 100

NEW YORK, NY  April 19, 2018 - TIME magazine has named Judy Chicago to its annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. The TIME 100 recognizes the activism, innovation and achievement of the world’s most influential individuals. Judy Chicago created one of the most important works of art of the twentieth century, The Dinner Party (1974–79), an installation celebrating women’s achievements in Western culture in the form of a meticulously crafted banquet table set for 39 historical women and honoring 999 others. The work is permanently housed at the Brooklyn Museum. Chicago’s work is in the collections of major museums around the world. She is represented by Ben Allison.

JUDGMENT RENDERED IN FAVOR OF STELLA VIGIL

SANTA FE, NM April 3, 2018 - The First Judicial District Court has rendered its Final Judgment in favor of Stella Vigil against Zia Credit Union following her successful jury verdict in December 2016. The final judgment tripled the amount of damages awarded by the jury. The Court also determined that Zia Credit Union committed willful unconscionable trade practices in handling Ms. Vigil's account, in violation of the New Mexico Unfair Practices Act, and awarded pre- and post-judgment interest. The judgment is the culmination of a six-year battle following Zia Credit Union’s conversion of her account. Bardacke Allison LLP represents Ms. Vigil.

SHERLOCK GNOMES TO BE RELEASED ON MARCH 23, 2018

SANTA FE, NM March 14, 2018 - Sherlock Gnomes will open in theaters nationwide on March 23, 2018. The animation movie follows 2011’s Gnomeo and Juliet. This time the world's greatest "ornamental detective,” Sherlock Gnomes, is hired to investigate why garden gnome friends are disappearing. The film features the vocal talents of Johnny Depp as Sherlock Gnomes, James McAvoy as Gnomeo, Emily Blunt as Juliet, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Gnome Watson, and also includes Mary J. Blige, Michael Caine, Maggie Smith, and Ozzy Osbourne.  Elton John wrote original music for the film. Ben Allison of Bardacke Allison LLP handled the rights agreements for the picture on behalf of Conan Doyle Estate Ltd.

SANTA FE REPORTER INVESTIGATES SFUAD CLOSURE

SANTA FE, NM February 28, 2018  -  The Santa Fe Reporter's cover story today reports on the lawsuit brought by more than 50 current and former Santa Fe University of Art and Design students. The students filed suit against the university’s owners and operators, Laureate Education, Inc. and its affiliates, for breaching the students’ contracts and making misrepresentations in connection with the university’s closure. The story investigates Laureate’s actions and their consequences in the lives of students. NEW YORK TIMES RECOGNIZES FABSCRAP

NEW YORK, NY February 8, 2018 - Bardacke Allison client FABSCRAP was featured today in a New York Times story, at the start of New York's Fashion Week. FABSCRAP is a public charity founded in 2015 by Jessica Schreiber to save mountains of fabric scraps by partnering with New York’s fashion industry to prevent the fabric from ending up in landfills. FABSCRAP recycles the fabric for a variety of uses. Bardacke Allison’s Breanna Contreras represents FABSCRAP in intellectual property matters.
