Breanna Contreras Quoted in Washington Post

Nancy Guthrie

SANTA FE - September 16, 2021 - Partner and mother, Breanna Contreras, was quoted in The Washington Post article, Parenting a child under 12 in the age of delta: ‘It’s like a fire alarm every day’.

Breanna Contreras, 33, an intellectual property attorney whose children are 6, 3 and 20 months, said she and her husband, an engineer at Los Alamos National Lab, made the difficult decision to put all three of their children in school or day care because of their demanding jobs. But she second-guesses the choice every day.

“I feel like we’re constantly reacting,” said Contreras, who lives in Santa Fe, N.M. “There’s not enough time to be proactive. It’s like a fire alarm every day.”

Breanna Contreras is a partner at Bardacke Allison LLP.

Meow Wolf Opens Convergence Station in Denver

Nancy Guthrie

DENVER September 16, 2021 – This weekend is the Grand Opening of Meow Wolf’s permanent Denver exhibition, Convergence Station. It has been three years in the making and involves 300 creatives, including more than 110 from Colorado.

CNN Travel writes,

Imagine this: Four worlds collide following a cosmic event 25 years ago. All inhabitants lose their memories, leading to the disappearances of four women.

What sounds like the premise of a sci-fi novel is actually the foundation of art collective Meow Wolf's third permanent immersive experience in Denver, "Convergence Station." But it will offer an otherworldly escape.

When the exhibition opens September 17, visitors will become part of the story, exploring the four worlds -- kaleidoscopic cathedrals, Corinthian catacombs, lush alien habitats and dazzling but gritty cityscapes -- to investigate what happened.

Though the backstory sounds supernatural, it is a story of immigration inspired by the Sun Valley neighborhood of Denver where the building is located, said Chadney Everett, senior creative director of Meow Wolf Denver.

"Convergence Station connects us to four disparate, alien worlds, mysteriously converged together by a rare cosmic event," Everett said. "Some of its citizens are thrilled for the opportunities of this new world, and others long for their homes. A story expressed within many immigrant communities."

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports, “As awkward as it sounds, Convergence Station makes no sense and yet perfect sense as the name of Meow Wolf’s third and newest permanent exhibition, which opens Friday in downtown Denver.”

Bardacke Allison represents Meow Wolf.

August 28, 2021 – January 9, 2022

SAN FRANCISCO September 7, 2021 – A major retrospective exhibition of the work of Judy Chicago opened today at the De Young Museum. The de Young Museum writes “We’re celebrating Judy Chicago and her legacy as one of the founding forces behind the 1970s feminist art movement. Visualize Chicago’s storied career through her strikingly colorful works on canvas, porcelain plates, car hoods, and much more. Chicago shocked the fine art world again and again, and when they tried to push her out, she created her own spaces for art.” Judy Chicago was also featured on the cover of SF Chronicle Datebook.

VAL KILMER PROTECTS ARTISTS’ RIGHTS TO EXPRESS IDEAS IN THEIR OWN WAY

Ann-erika White Bird

SANTA FE, NM February 18, 2020 — Texas artist Bale Creek Allen filed a lawsuit in 2018 against actor and artist Val Kilmer, alleging Kilmer copied Allen’s realistic tumbleweed sculpture finished in gold. Bardacke Allison asked a federal court to throw out the lawsuit because Kilmer only copied the idea of making a golden tumbleweed, creating his own tumbleweed sculpture rather than copying Allen’s. Ideas are not protected by copyright and every artist is free to express an idea in his or her own way. In addition, Allen’s tumbleweed sculpture had no copyright protection to the extent it merely replicated an object in nature. Before the Court ruled, plaintiff Allen voluntarily withdrew his own lawsuit permanently and without any settlement agreement. Ben Allison represented Val Kilmer.

Santa Fe Voters Win

Ann-erika White Bird

SANTA FE, NM February 4, 2020 – Last week the federal District Court in New Mexico upheld the constitutionality of City of Santa Fe campaign finance laws requiring disclosure of money contributed and spent to influence local elections. The laws were developed by the Santa Fe Ethics and Campaign Review Board (ECRB), chaired by Bardacke Allison partner Justin Miller, and were challenged after the ECRB required an advocacy group to file a report of its spending on a campaign video. The Court found that the disclosure ordinance was constitutional and served the interests of the voters’ right to know who is spending money and in what amounts advocating for or against ballot measures. The Campaign Legal Center, which represented the City and the ECRB, reported on the decision here: Voters Win In Santa Fe.
